REGISTRATION PLATES

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

The 2001 regulations give all the necessary information of registration plates. The proscribed font
for motorcycles can be found in Schedule 4 part 2

  • All motorcycles must display a rear facing registration plate.
     
  • The numbers and letters must be in the proscribed font.

    • Height: 64mm x 44w
      • Stroke Width: 10mm
      • Space Between Characters: 10mm
      • Space Between Groups: 30mm
      • All Margins: 11mm
      • Symbols: Eurostars or GB are the only ones permitted.
         
    • Numbers and letters must be black on a reflective yellow background.
       
    • The plate must be illuminated during hours of darkness.
       
    • Must conform to:
      • BSAU145A
      • SAU145D (from 01.Sept.01)
         
    • Motorcycles registered prior to 01 January 1973 can have silver or white lettering on a black background, however the letters and numbers must be in the proscribed font.
      From 01 September 2001 the maker's name or trademark and the name and postcode of the supplying outlet must also be shown on the plate.


OFFENCES

  • The vehicle:
    • Has the incorrect size of lettering or numbers or correct layout.
      • The precise regulations with respect to layout and size are vehicle specific.
    • Does not have a number plate fixed to it;
    • Has the registration mark obscured, eg so dirty that you cannot read it.
    • Does not have the number plate lit at night.


PENALTIES

  • Fine up to £1,000 for each offence.
